Lake Victoria. also called Victoria Nyanza, is the largest lake in Africa. Of all the fresh water lakes in the world, it the second largest in size, the only superior to it being Lake Superior in North America. It lies in mainly in Tanzania and Uganda but bordering Kenya

400,00 years ago, Lake Victoria was formed 1,134 m above sea level.. it has an average depth of 40 m and a surface area of 68,800 km2. Lake Victoria has a maximum depth of 80 m, a volume of 2,760 km3 and a basin area of 195,000 km2.

The British explorer John Hanning Speke was the first European to find the lake in the 1850s during his expedition to find the source of the Nile River, and decided to dedicate his discovery to Queen Victoria.
The lake and the surrounding offers several tourists activities such as fishing trips, bird watching, hiking and boat-rides. swimming is also possible but should be done with caution due to malaria and the bilhazia disease. Many of the People have no access to clean water or improved sanitation facilities, resulting in high incidences of water realted diseases.
Scientists are warning that lake Victoria is under threat of dying. they blame overfishing and pollution for severely damaged fish stocks. Many mammal species live in the region of lake Victoria, and some of these are closely associated with the lake itself and the nearby wetlands. among these are the, African clawless otter, spotted necked otter, marsh mongoose, sitatunga, bohor reedbuck, defassa waterbuck, cane rats and giant otter shrew.
