Coral Reefs: The Oceans Paradise

By Hailey Fernando

Coral Reefs are underwater ecosystems. They come into existence when loose pieces of coral start to gather up and settle down on the coasts of continents. Coral Reefs are important as they are home to many sea creatures like fish, starfish, urchins and octopi. As well as giving these animals a home, they also protect our coastlines from erosion and storms.

The largest coral reef in the world is the Great Barrier Reef located in Queensland, Australia. This coral reef measures 348 700km² making it bigger then Victoria and Tasmania combined. It is home to a third of the worlds coral population and houses over 5000 different marine and mammal species. This reef is also one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
