A bay is a body of water surrounded by land. A bay is typically smaller and more enclosed than a gulf. The mouth of the bay , where it meets the ocean or lake is normally wider than a gulf. Lagoons, bights and sounds are another way to say bays. Bays are formed by weak rocks that include chalk, limestone and or granite, forming a headland. The sea erodes the softer rocks faster rather than the hard rocks, forming a bay.
Rivers can form a bay
A bay helps reduce the strength of wind and it can block waves
bays go out to big areas of water like oceans and lakes.
